Her Garden Within

She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but she quietly prayed in this next season,“Lord, let this be the rebirth of me. Of everything that tried to uproot me. Let it be a holy rebellion, a righteous revival. Let it grow from my garden within.”

Have you ever been through a series of events that slowly drew you away from God? I am sure many of us have. After seasons like that, trying to show up in the world as the person you are becoming can feel impossible. At times, it may even feel unbearable. Even hearing God can seem difficult.
Jesus explained this in the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8:4–15. If you are familiar with that passage, ask yourself: What is the condition of the soil of my heart? Is it rocky, thorny, or fertile? Am I allowing God’s Word to grow in my own garden?
In The Garden Within, Dr. Anita Phillips explains that our hearts are the seedbed of our emotional and spiritual lives. What grows outwardly begins inwardly. The condition of our soil determines what can truly take root. Have you checked your soil lately? Pause for a moment and check in with yourself.
It is said that you can only grow at the same rate that you are willing to cultivate your soil. Cultivation looks like slowing down long enough to assess the damage. It means acknowledging what hurt you, what hardened you, and what distracted you. We must stop rushing and honestly examine what was wounded so we can prepare our hearts for new growth, so that we can be fruitful. Simply put, fruitfulness requires intention.
Lately, I’ve noticed that many people measure “growth” or “fruit” by external outcomes. But the Lord looks at our spiritual fruit and examines what is forming within us. When you prioritize your spiritual growth, the physical results become the byproduct.
While trying to grow, it may feel like you've been buried and you can't see the light. If you changed your perspective, you can look at that uncomfortable season of growth as a covering by God. That covering keeps us protected so that you can grow into purpose; from your garden within. It's in this time when the Holy Spirit cultivates your soil so that you become all that God has called you to be.
That growth you're desiring can only happen when you allow yourself to be present. Gift yourself a season of rest, make time for God's word and prayer, and allow your heart to be good soil so that strong roots can grow, and you become fruitful in the eyes of God. As you do this, my prayer is that you experience a holy rebellion and a righteous revival.
